About the Team
AGF’s Taxation Department is responsible for tax compliance, tax support and tax solutions delivery for all business units.

The department builds and maintains trusted partner relationships with internal clients and stakeholders to achieve a collaborative mindset and united approach to business results and client engagement. It recommends practical solutions and provides tax support to achieve the organization’s goals and business priorities. AGF Taxation is a leader in fostering AGF’s brand both internally and externally across all AGF businesses.

About the role
The finance department has a leadership role for you in our Toronto office. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, this role requires someone who will oversee all aspects of the company’s tax functions, including tax compliance, planning and administration; and the compliance on Foreign Act Tax Compliance Act (“FATCA”) and Common Reporting Standards (“CRS”) across the organization.

Your responsibilities:

  • Manage tax risks and oversee all income tax matters and tax compliance functions for the AGF group of companies. This includes reviewing tax provision, and tax returns, as well as resolving tax issues and being responsible for tax reporting functions.
  • Develop and monitor transfer pricing policies and related documentations.
  • Develop strategies to achieve goals of the Taxation department.
  • Provide tax consultation on transactions and corporate reorganizations. This included escalating significant issues for discussion with senior management, working with external advisors to minimize tax risks and resolving complex tax issues.
  • Perform tax due diligence on mergers and acquisitions, and divestitures as needed. Sometimes this involves working in conjunction with external tax advisors.
  • Provide tax advice on new fund products, fund reorganizations, other fund related issues and institutional solutions. This includes reviews of fund prospectuses, annual information forms, circulars and investment management agreements.
  • Provide tax consultation for all business units and functional areas across the organization, including fund oversight, finance, sales/marketing, human resources, investor tax administration as well as the opening and closing of foreign offices. This includes reviews of sales/marketing materials, presentation to the leaders of the sales team and responses to advisor and client queries.Liaise with the internal departments to work on all operational tax issues and tax solutions.
  • Work with external counsel as required to resolve complex tax issues.
  • Manage financial tax auditors by liaising with external auditors, including the resolution of controversial tax accounting issues.
  • Manage government income and commodity tax audits with the objective of minimizing audit adjustments as well as managing dispute resolutions.
  • Analyze new tax rules, determine the tax implications for AGF, and implement all the relevant tax changes across the AGF group of companies, funds and operations.
  • Identify, analyze, and implement tax planning opportunities and strategies for AGF.
  • Manage staff

    – promote a positive working environment and lead a high performing team of tax professionals. Promote a team approach, providing frequent feedbacks and motivate them to increase their performance. Encourage their professional development by targeting their development areas and then then monitor their progress.

  • Work on special projects as necessary.

Your skills and qualifications:

  • At least 10 years of tax experience, with 5 being at the tax managerial level or higher
  • Strong leadership skills and at least 5 years of experience overseeing a team
  • Accounting designation (CPA, CA) and completion of CICA In-Depth Tax Courses Level I and II
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to educate and influence senior management decisions
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, taking a practical approach in recommendations of tax solutions
  • Excellent organizational, project management and relationship management skills
  • Proven track record of ability to execute and deliver solutions
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines

Additional Strengths you may bring to the role:
