Reporting to Manager of Emergency Services, the successful candidate will be responsible for assessing, planning implementation and evaluating nursing care and practice activities in a multidisciplinary family centred care environment.

The Registered Practical Nurse will be responsible for personal patient care, vital signs, physical assessment, monitoring IV′s, setting up medical equipment as appropriate and other duties as assigned.

Requirements:
• Current certification with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Practical Nurse.

• Registered Practical Nurse Diploma from a recognized community college.

• Current Basic Cardiac Life Support certification (Ontario Heart & Stroke guidelines preferred).

• Competent to perform CPR at a basic Cardiac Life Support level.

• Previous or current (within 24 months) Emergency Department experience.

• Current Medication Administration course.

• Physical Assessment course from a recognized institution and/or equivalent.

• Demonstrated experience in performing electrocardiograms (ECGs) an asset.

• Demonstrated experience in performing venipuncture an asset.

• Demonstrated sound organizational and prioritization skills with the ability to work well in stressful situations.

• Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work well with patients, families, all levels of staff and the community.

• Demonstrated ability to relate to patients and family members representative of a diverse community setting.

• Demonstrated commitment to and practice of good customer service when dealing with patients, colleagues, volunteers and other members of the community and public.

• Demonstrated excellent documentation skills.

• Demonstrated ability to effectively work
– independently and within a multidisciplinary team.

• Demonstrated sound organizational and prioritization skills with the ability to work well in stressful situations.

• Demonstrated ability to perform all RPN nursing and related duties to the full scope of their practice preferred.

• Demonstrated pattern of good attendance and reliability.

• Demonstrated understanding of and commitment SHN’s comprehensive safety programs and practices including staff safety, patient safety, environmental safety and participates in regular in-service education in this area.

• Exposure to Lean principles, an understanding of methodologies and tools and a commitment to the use of these in support of providing the best healthcare experience possible to our patients.

• Demonstrates a commitment to customer service when dealing with patients, colleagues, volunteers and other members of the community and public.

• Demonstrates values consistent with SHN′s Code of Conduct and is committed to fostering a healthy and positive work environment in accordance with Health & Safety policy and legislation.

• Utilize protective equipment provided and identify and reports hazards.

• Engages in ethical conduct and strives to understand and appreciate the diversity of our patient/staff population and community.

• Excellent work performance and attendance.
