Media Specialist

This is a Part-time position in Scarborough, ON posted July 12, 2021.

– THE NEIGHBOURHOOD ORGANIZATION (TNO, formerly Thorncliffe Neighbourhood Office ) is a community based multicultural, multi-service agency, which offers a broad range of programs to serve Thorncliffe Park, Flemingdon Park, and the surrounding communities through strengthening the quality of individual and community life.

Program Summary: TNO believes that young people, are the leaders of their own lives and with supportive, caring adults to help guide them, they will excel through their individual life journeys.

Their strengths and assets, when properly supported and reinforced, have an efficacy far beyond anything adults can dream up and create for them.

Additionally, TNO maintains that to ask a youth to change requires acknowledging and addressing the environment in which they live—the systems and context in which their current behavior and beliefs are shaped.

All engagement with youth, therefore, not only promotes youth voice, but is also mindful of the systemic issues that impact youth, their families and communities.

Main Tasks & Responsibilities: Pro-actively conduct outreach and engage youth in a variety of settings across the community, focusing on the assigned stream.

Meet with youth virtually, in small groups and one-on-one to support their development.

Work collaboratively with youth and team members to co-create and implement programming and activities that address their identified needs and support youth-defined goals—including community development activities as identified with youth.

Organizing and collaborating on group and peer Mental Health programming.

On a rotational basis lead a drop-in for current and new clients to talk, ask questions, get resources and connect but virally and in-person.

Work collaboratively with TNO-based cross-skilled team specific to the assigned stream.

Work collaboratively with other partners and organizations working with youth in the same stream.

Support youth-defined engagement in community
– and agency-sponsored events and activities.

Foster an environment where respecting differences is encouraged by working together, facilitating discussion, using active listening skills, and developing mutual understanding.

Be familiar with/adhere to all TNO, Covid, and the Youth Center rules, and be able to articulate policies to visitors and youth.

Enter client and case management information into appropriate database(s) in a timely and accurate manner.

Maintain records of youth participation with programs, events, and activities.

Maintain nuanced records of each youth in order to identify development, needs, and provide support in the youth’s developmental journey.

Submits required weekly and monthly reports accurately and on-time.

Monitor program trends and emerging needs.

Maintain up-to-date understanding of promising practices in the youth service field.

Comfort with developing new community connections and marinating current ones in a mutually beneficial manner.

Conducts program promotion in community social landmarks, jointly with service partner’s.

Participates in networks of neighbourhood based service as aligned with the program focus area.

Represent TNO on local committees.

Plans, participates and supports local community events.

Networks with other staff, attends staff meetings & agency events including United Way related activities, staff social events, community events, staff and agency committees.

Qualifications: Education Community College Diploma or higher in Media, Film & TV studies, Social Media with a Social Services connection.

Experience: Minimum three years of related experience working with youth, providing frontline services and experience in youth outreach strategies & program facilitation.

Experience working with low-income, multi-racial, multi-lingual newcomer communities.

Experience working from an integrated anti-oppression, LGBTQ positive framework Experience working virtually and has strong knowledge of navigating the different platforms used by youth.

Knowledge and experience with editing, production, apps, design and more Case management, familiar with databases First Aid & CPR certification are required to be maintained throughout employment De-escalation, crisis management and Harm Reduction training an asset Valid Police Clearance for Vulnerable Sector Working Conditions: Hours of Work: Successful candidate would be required to work regular hours for 35 hours per weeks, and flexible between 8:30AM to 8:00PM besides evening shifts and weekends as decided by program requirements.

Location: This position will be located within any of TNO’s service locations based on community and program requirements.

The locations (multiple) for this position may be added or moved to new addresses in the future according to the community and program requirements.
